A: Where are you from?

B: From? I'm from here.

     Well, near here.

     I live just outside the city

     in the suburbs with my family.

A: Suburbs. That's nice.

     And do you have a hobby?

B: Who has time for hobbies?

     Um, I guess I like studying.

A: Studying?

B: Yeah. Well, that's what I do most of the time.

     I want to work; get a good job later.

     So studying is what I'm into right now.

A: Well, good luck with that.

B: Thanks. How about you?

A: So, do you live by yourself or with your family.

B: Um, I live alone.

    I've got an apartment in the centre of the city.

A: Downtown?

B: Yeah, right. It's not so convenient.

     But, um, it's ok. I miss my family sometimes.

A: Really?

B: Yeah, except for ............... guitar. It's so noisy.

A: Pardon me.

B: I said I don't miss my brother.

    Now I can listen to the music I really want to.

A: Because you have your own place.

B: That's right.

A: So, how about you?

    Do you live near here too?

B: No. I wish.

     My home, my family is way out in the country.

A: A rural area?

    You couldn't get an apartment close to here?

B: No. I can't afford to.

     So, I commute back and forth.

     It takes over two hours.

A: Oh my gosh. Two hours.

B: But it's okay. I can watch movies and

    tv programmes on my video player.

A: Ah, so, you're into movies? Cool.

B: I used to play video games

    with my brother at home.

    But now I'm almost never at home.

A: Yeah I see.

A: Hey! So you're on the train earlier today.

B: Oh, yeah.

A: So I guess you live far from here.

B: No, no, no, no.

    Actually I live in the neighbourhood .............

A: Pardon me?

B: I said I live nearby with my family.

A: So why you're on the train earlier?

B: I was hanging out with my friends

    a little while ago.

    That's pretty much what I do in my free time.

A: Hanging out with friends? Me too.

     I don't like being alone.

B: Yeah.

A: Exactly.

A: How many people are in your family?

B: There are five people are in my family: my parents and my older sister and my younger brother.

A: Younger brother? What's he like?

B: Like? Wow, that's a tough question.

     I don't know. He's some .........

A: A cool guy?

B: No. Definitely not cool.

     I think he's average; a typical teenager.

A: Hm hm. Is he tall?

B: Tall? Um, he's not so tall; same height as me.

A: Handsome like me?

B: Huh, you're not handsome.

And he's not handsome; he's just average. Yeah.

A: You said your grandmother lives with you.

B: Yes. I love her so much.

     She is always doing nice things for me.

     She's so sweet.

A: How would you describe her?

     What does she look like?

B: Look like? That's an easy question.

     She is slender and pretty.

A: Pretty?

B: Yeah. She was an actress when she was young and she did some modeling.

A: Cool. And what does she do now?

B: Well, she's not ..um; she's very active.

Always busy with her friends; doing things to help people.

I think she has a job of doing some volunteer work or something.

A: I think we expect grandmothers to be doing quiet things like reading books or just watching tv.

B: But that's not my grandmother at all.

UNIT 2 - Conversation - 03

A: ... me and my sister.

    So, there are just the four of us.

B: Do you get along with your sister?

A: Do I get along with?

     Wow, that's a difficult question.

B: Really? Why?

A: Well, she's older; two years older and she's really a good student; makes good grades, always winning this contest and that competition.

B: So she gets attention.

A: Yeah. That's it.

     Mom and dad just like her better I think.

B: No, no, no, no. Don't say that.

A: I know I shouldn't say that.

    But, maybe, I'm a little bit jealous.

    She doesn't even work hard.

    I have to work harder; much harder to study than she does.

A: Do you see your dad very much?

B: Yeah. He doesn't work late every night like other fathers do.

He's usually at home the same time every night.

A: Do you look like him or your mother?

B: That's an interesting question.

     Um, he's bald but I have

     So we don't look alike that much.

A: But I mean .. You know ...

B: Yeah, I think I look like my mother.&

     She has small eyes, and so do I.

     And we have the same nose.

A: So look like your mom.

B: Look like my mom.

    But I have my dad's personality.

UNIT 3 - Conversation - 01

A: So where do you wanna go; now that we're here? The department store or the used store?

B: Oh, it's really hard to say.

     This is the best consignment shop in town.

A: Everyone who is careful about money shops here. But the department store is the one that we can trust. You've been shopping there all your life. (Yeah.)

A: You had your first part-time job there.

B: They've been in business (for) 35 years.

A: And we know if we get something we don't like

    we can just take it back to the department store.

    The consignment store has a no-returns policy.

B: Wait a minute.    What are we here to buy again?

    You said you needed shirts?

A: No. Shoes.

B: Shoes? ... Who on earth would buy used shoes?

     You've got to go to the department store.

A: But you're always talking about saving money

UNIT 3 - Conversation - 02

A: I see. You really wanna look sharp, don't you?

B: Or your better.

    This is a very important event coming up.

A: And you know that if you look your best  you have better chance of getting the job than another person. So you want to get a suit and new belt  from that fancy brand store which has got all the famous names and logos and labels with a really nice white business shirt; classic look.

B: But it's so much more expensive than wonder mart

A: which we're not going to

     because it only has coloured shirts.

     If you're going to look good for a job interview

     you need something classic.

B: Alright. I got it. I got it.

    I want to go to the nice store anyway.

UNIT 3 - Conversation - 03

A: You're the best dad helping me out like this.

B: No problem. No problem. You and your new honey have to have a nice place to raise a family.

A: Well, I was thinking. We're going to need a new sofa, some tables and chairs and some curtains.

B: Just to get started?

A: And we're also going to need a new 57-inch flat screen 3D tv. and speakers for music in every room.

B: And all that.

A: Plus all the electronic goodies for the kitchen.

     Because you know how much I love to cook.

    I simply must have a great kitchen.

B: Then our first stop today is Electric Avenue

    to get you cooking with everything you need.

A: Oh, dad, you're the best. Just the best.

UNIT 3 - Conversation - 04

A: The problem with shopping for Devin is

     that she loves books and music.

B: I know. You know her collection of all that preads from her living room down the hallway and into her office at home.

A: Oh, how do I know she doesn't already have    whatever I buy here?

B: That's a risk you have to take. No one ever said friendship would be easy. Alright, we're here.

A: Bookstore to the left of me; music store on the right. Hmm, I got it. Here's something I'll bet she doesn't have.

B: What?

A: This brand-new book about the music world.

B: Great. Let's go and get it.

UNIT 4 - Conversation - 01

A: What do you drink with your lunch or dinner?

B: I like tea; straight tea, no sugar.

A: Me too. And I like coffee too.

B: Coffee! Oh, I can't stand that.

A: Why not?

B: So bitter. If I drink coffee it has to be with a lot of milk and sugar so it doesn't taste bitter.

A: How about juice or soft drinks?

B: I drink juice sometimes.

    Fruit juices, or vegetable juices

A: Like tomato?

B: Yeah. But I don't like soft drinks at all.

A: Me neither. All that sugary stuff makes me fat.

B: Ah, ha.

UNIT 4 - Conversation - 02

A: When you go to a restaurant and you have a choice? What would you get? Bread, rice or pasta?

B: I always get rice at home, so if I go out I like ..um,, pasta.

A: Oh, me too. Red sauce, or cream sauce or ....

B: Oh, it doesn't matter just as long as it's got chili peppers in it.

A: Chili peppers! Oh, you don't mind the heat?

B: No. I don't care. I like that spicy taste.

A: What do you like in your pasta?

B: I like seafood pasta when I can get it.

A: Amm.

B: Why?

A: Well, see I'm allergic to shrimp and I worry about the other seafood too.

B: Oh, I see.

UNIT 4 - Conversation - 03

A: What's your favourite vegetable?

B: Carrot. Raw carrot.

A: Oh, really? That's the only vegetable I don't like. Carrots.

B: You don't? I love them? They're really crunchy. And very good for your teeth.

A: I like cabbage.

B: Me too.

A: You put cabbage in anything and all eat it.

B: And lettuce and salad.

A: So crispy and tasty.

UNIT 4 - Conversation - 04

A: So, what kind of food do you like to eat?

B: Umm, let me see. Well, I guess I like er ... healthy food.

A: Like what?

B: Like rice, fresh fish and fresh vegetables. (Ha ha.) You know stuff like that.

A: A mom's healthy cooking.

B: Right, right. right, right.

A: Well, me too, of course. I can't stand that fast food.

B: How can anyone not like home style cooking?

UNIT 5 - Conversation - 01

A: What are you listening to?

B: Ah? What?

A: What are you listening to?

B: Oh, this? This is Chill Baby Bro.

A: I don't know him.

B: I love his slow funky ballads. They're really relaxing.

A: Oh, yeah.

B: But I don't like all that really hard rap stuff.

A: Like what?

B: All the slangs and all the bad words. 'Hey, look at me how much money I have' kind of things.

A: Huh, I know what you mean.

UNIT 5 - Conversation - 02

A: There are lots of new dance moves I wanna try. Um .. for example, have you .? Wait, come here. You haven't seen this song yet, have you?

B: Which one?

A: This one. The new dance video from the Mini Monkeys.

B: Yeah, sure, yeah. I know about them.

    I just haven't seen the video yet.

A: Look, look. Here comes ..... that dance move.

B: Wow, that's great. Play it back; I wanna see it again. Yes, and I love that sound.

A: Me too.

UNIT 5 - Conversation - 03

A: And here's the microphone. Your song is up next, right?

B: Yeah ................

A: Is that all you listen to? Punk and metal music?

B: Why not? It's the best. Listening to that music gets me going, gives me energy. But I do listen to other stuff. For example classic rock.

A: As long as it's loud, you listen to it.

B: Ha, ha, ha. What would you like?

A: I play piano. So, I like classical music. It's soft for adults.

UNIT 5 - Conversation - 04

A: You've been practicing piano for like three years. Dude, you gonna be famous.

B: Well, that's the idea.

A: How did you learn to write pop music?

B: There are plenty of ...... websites that help you compose music.

A: For example?

B: This one here is my favourite one.

     Look at that.

A: Yeah, very cool.

B: Pop music lets me be creative.

    I couldn't write anything else.

UNIT 6 - Conversation - 01

A: I think you're probably busier than I am.

     Maybe I've got more free time than you.

B: You're right. I am busy. What do you do in your free time?

A: Um. I like staying at home. You know, my room is great. There are lots of video games,  and I can kill time watching tv, reading comics and stuff like that.

B: Comic books? Me too.

     How long have you been doing that?

A: Um .. since I was in elementary school.

    I've got a pretty big collection now.

UNIT 6 - Conversation - 02

A: ..... So, that's what I do. How about you?

    Do you have a hobby?

B: Except for playing with my dog ... umm

     I didn't until just a couple of months ago.

     My sister was volunteering or something.

     And she seemed to like it.

     Helping older people who had trouble getting around.

A: So, you decided to do that too?

B: Yeah. Volunteer. Like I said, I just started recently.

     So, I haven't decided how much I like it yet.

     I think it makes them happy.

A: Um .. sounds interesting.

Tell me more about it.

B: Okay. I go every Saturday .........

UNIT 6 - Conversation - 03

A: What about you in your free time.

B: Dangling on the drums, dude, after school.

     We're trying to start a band.

A: A band? Wow, that sounds interesting. Since when?

B: I've only started two weeks ago.

A: Two weeks? Why the drums?

B: I tried the trumpet at first, but I wasn't very good, so now I'm playing the drums.

    I like that a lot better.

A: And you say you meet after school?

B: Right, right, yeah. We meet over at my friend's house  just for hours.

     We could play hours and hours playing music and stuff. It's fun.

UNIT 6 - Conversation - 04

A: Look at you. You've lost weight.

     Are you doing any exercise or something?

B: Cycling. It's the healthiest thing I've ever done.

     I usually go all day about eight hours on Saturdays. Have you ever tried it?

A: No, not me. I sometimes play basketball with a couple of friends of mine.

     But, I've never done any cycling.

B: How long have you been doing it?

A: Umm, not for more. I began about a year ago.

B: Well, you look great. Keep it up.

A: Thanks.

UNIT 7 - Conversation - 01

A: You've been abroad, right?

What's the coolest place you've ever been to?

B: Umm, coolest place? Wow, that's ..........

A: a difficult question for you, right?

B: I loved Brazil when I went. Beautiful views, the people ..

A: And the culture ...

B: Right, yeah. But the coolest place would probably be the Great Barrier reef in Australia. That's great because I just love the ocean.

All that beautiful scenery above and under the water. You know, the coral and the tropical fish?

A: I'm so jealous.

B: Absolutely gorgeous. The best place on earth.

A: You can't wait to go back there, right.

UNIT 7 - Conversation - 02

A: I guess the most interesting place I've ever been was Egypt.

B: Oh, Egypt! Really? Why?

A: Well, you know how China has the great wall.

It's one of the most famous tourist destinations.

B: Yeah, I loved it.

A: Well, Egypt has its things and the great pyramids.

B: Right, right. How was that?

A: Yeah, it was amazing to see but it's hot and crowded and so noisy in Egypt.

     And when you get there, you think, wow, the pyramids ...

     What you don't know is that they are like right across the street from fast food restaurants.

B: You're kidding.

 

UNIT 7 - Conversation - 03

A: You went to Europe not too long ago? 

B: Right, yeah.

A: Paris is such a dream.

B: I was in Paris for only two days actually.

     I spent most of time in Rome and going throughout Italy.

A: I'm so jealous. So, how was it?

B: Great. Unbelievable. I mean really really great. So much to see. It's a little crowded, but all those .....

A: You went to the museums, right?

B: We had all of them,

     so, all the historic places had great food.

     The people were so nice too.

A: You're lucky you had such a great time.

UNIT 7 - Conversation - 04

A: Let me see. The best city in the world. 

B: Someplace you've already visited.

A: Well, lots of people say London is the best for sightseeing, but it's probably the most expensive city in the world to visit. Lots to see when I went a few years ago, but the hotels are so expensive, and the food isn't so great.

B: Umm, sorry to hear that.

A: New York, New York city is great. Great restaurants, ....entertainment ....

B: Shopping?

A: Yes, shopping isn't as expensive as you think.

     And, it's easy to get around by taxi. Taxis are so cheap. Great variety of good food.

B: So, you say New York is the best city in the world.

A: Yeah.

UNIT 8 - Conversation - 01

A: So, how about you? What sport do you like?

B: I love football. I never miss an Eagle's game.

     That's a local team where I'm from.

A: Oh, yeah. You must be into soccer too then?

B: Soccer? You're kidding, right?

     Soccer's okay for kids after school.

     But you'll never catch me watching anything but baseball or football.

A: Why not? Soccer's popular all over the world.

B: Okay, fine, but not where I'm from.

Ever since I was a little girl, my dad was a fan,

     so I went to games with him.

A: That's interesting. I had no idea you're such a sport fan.

B: Love sports. Absolutely, love them.

UNIT 8 - Conversation - 02

A: We'll just have the best time. Me and my friends will go down to the empty parking lot next to the gas centre and skateboard. You know walk on our stances and spins. 

B: Oh, speaking like that. Do you guys do any snowboarding?

A: You know? That's funny. I love skateboarding

     but I've never done any snowboarding.

B: That's terrible. Snowboarding is the best.

     Yeah, so much fun.

A: Hmm. Have you ever hear of water skiing?

It's popular in some places where they have lakes and rivers. As people pulls you, and you have to ski on the water. 

B: Yeah? Is it fun?

A: Umm. It's not bad.

UNIT 8 - Conversation - 03

A: I'm not really that interested in sports.

Are you?

B: Yeah. I play tennis.

A: Table tennis? You mean Ping-Pong?

B: No. I mean tennis like tennis court wearing white .....

A: Ha ha .. Real tennis.

     I always thought that was a rich guy sport.

B: No, no, no, no. Lots of people play tennis;

not just rich people. You must be thinking of golf.

A: Oh my gosh! Golf! That's so expensive and so high society. I don't think you could ever get me interested in that.

B: Umm. Me neither. Well, it's alright. Maybe, I'll try it once.

UNIT 8 - Conversation - 04

A: What sport did you use to play?

B: Use to play? Umm, let's see. Some baseball.

     Oh, I used to play a lot of volleyball.

A: Volleyball. That's nice. Hitting the ball back and forth.

B: Yeah, that's fun.

     I like team sports where you set up your partner. Kind of a challenge.

A: How about basketball? That's a team sport.

B: Yeah, it's not bad, but I don't like how fast that moves.

     It feels so competitive; so much more than volleyball or other sports.

A: Yeah. I guess that's true.

B: Kind of cool to watch, but, ummm, it's not my favourite.

UNIT 9 - Conversation - 01

A: Hey, how's it going?

B: Pretty good. You?

A: Yeah, not bad. Are you waiting for someone here?

B: Yeah. Standing in the rain, waiting for Yoshi to pick me up? Oh, you don't know him.

A: Yoshi?

B: My best friend from high school. He's so funny and full of energy, and a little bit crazy.

A: Crazy?

B: Yeah. You know? Entertaining and fun.

A: I see. Like you? Is that why you guys get along?

B: Mmm I guess so. And never thought of it before but yeah.

UNIT 9 - Conversation - 02

A: Who's your best friend? What's she like?

B: My best friend in the whole world is Anita.

A: Anita? From school?

B: Mmm.

A: Oh, I know her. She's mmm interesting.

B: Creative.

A: Yeah.

B: I think she's a really curious kind of person.

A: Cu.....? What does that mean/

B: Curious? Mmmmm. It means interested in many things, learning the stuff.

A: Curious. Yeah. I see what you mean.

     So, why do you get along with here?

B: Ah well, both in the fashion and design. You should see some of the things she can do with clothes and accessories.

A: Mmm. I'd like to see it some time.

UNIT 9 - Conversation - 03

A: Oh, this is Kim. I'll call her back.

B: Kim? I don't know her. Who is she?

A: Kim's in the dance club with me. We both love the same kind of music. I never told you about her. She's super smart.

B: She makes good grades.

A: No, no, no. She's pretty lazy about studying, so she doesn't make As, but she's naturally smart.

B: Must be nice to be so intelligent. Kim's problem is that she doesn't act like it. She acts a bit spacy.

A: Spacy? What does that mean?

B: You know? She's right here, but he brain is .... someplace else.  

A: Spacy. That's funny. Yeah, I know what you mean.

UNIT 9 - Conversation - 04

A: Um, that guy you were just talking to?

B: Yeah, Gin Hawk.

A: He seems like a real serious guy. Does he ever smile?

B: I don't know. He is serious and really hard working.  We're both into those same social issues, so I know him from an organization we belong to. Definitely a confident guy.

A: Confident? What does that mean?

B: Yeah, he's really sure of his opinions. He knows what he's talking about.

A: I got it 'confident'. I know what you mean.

UNIT 10 - Conversation - 01

A: Do you work full-time or part-time?

B: Full-time. I work at a travel agency downtown.

A: Ah, ha.

B: I've been there for three years now.

A: Three years? That's nice. How do you like it?

B: Yeah, it's a good job. The pay isn't great, but I like my co-worker. And my boss's nice.

A: You like it, huh?

B: Yeah.

A: You think you'll keep doing that job?

B: Yeah. Specially if I get my money.

UNIT 10 - Conversation - 02

A: You're working, right?

B: Just part-time. Yeah, while I finish school.

A: I see. Where do you work? Somewhere nearby?

B: Yeah, it's between school and home.

     I work at a small restaurant. A family owned place.

A: Oh, really? Do you like it?

B: Um, well, ....

A: Come on ...

B: No, not really. The woman is very nice and the food she cooks is delicious, but the man is so strict. And he's always getting angry.

A: Oh, that's terrible. I know.

B: I don't think I'll keep working there much longer.

UNIT 10 - Conversation - 03

A: You've finished with school.

B: Yeah, that's right. And I'm working for a trading company.

A: Ah, the one in the big tower near the station?

     The new building?

B: Yes.

A: Ah, ah. So, what do you do there?

B: Well, desk work mostly.

     Not terribly exciting to talk about I'm afraid. 

A: Ah, so, you don't like it.

B: Well, no . .er, It's quite boring.

    The office is quiet and no one is very friendly.

A: Ah, I see.

UNIT 10 - Conversation - 04

A: Do you still have that part-time job at the convenient store?

B: Oh, no, no, no. I quit that months ago. I couldn't stand it anymore.

A: Where are you now?

B: I've got a job after school at a software company.

A: You're kidding. That's so cool. What're you dong?  Computer ...?

B: Programming. Yeah.

A: Oh, really?

B: I know it's funny, but I help out the full-time guys a little bit.

A: Do you like it?

B: Love it. Great atmosphere. And there is one really cute girl working in the office ....

UNIT 11 - Conversation - 01

A: That was so funny.

B: I'll definitely go see that again. Hilarious.

A: The way that guy can change his face.

B: I know, I know. So many different kinds of .....

    ..... what's the word?

A: Yeah, oh, take your time.

B: The way you move, you know, your eyes and mouth.

A: Expressions?

B: Yeah, yeah. His expressions. So amazing. I wanna guy someday who can make me laugh like that.

A: I can make you laugh. Look at this.

B: Ah, not the same. Keep practising.

A: Yeah, I'll work on it.

UNIT 11 - Conversation - 02

A: Ah, you saw that? You saw it too. Wow, that was one of my favourite movies.

B: The way she looks at him with her eyes ... kind of ..

A: And the way he stands when she throws her arms around him ...

B: I wanna guy like that. To marry a guy who makes my heart go pow.

A: Affectionate. But that's not what makes it romantic.  He's .... umm ... give me a second.

B: No problem.

A: The way he lets her go to be free. Oh, what's the word.

B: Yeah, yeah. I know what you mean. He loves her, but he lets her be free.

A: Exactly. That's true love.

UNIT 11 - Conversation - 03

A: She's smart and beautiful and cool.

B: I like the way the movie makes the woman the hero.

The one who destroys the aliens and saves the universe.

A: She's .... How can I say it? What's ...

B: Brave?

A: Brave, but more than that.

     Like bold and strong. A brave hero and strong, but she's not afraid to take a chance. Risk. All I can think of is that.

     Uh, never mind.

B: I wish I could be a hero to you, babe.

A: You're already perfect just the way you are.

UNIT 11 - Conversation - 04

A: I think those movies are boring.

B: Oh, you're crazy. You think they're dull because they're not action movies. Car chases ..

A: Why do you think he's such a good director?

B: Because his movies deal with important issues.

A: Hmm ..

B: I like someone who .... I don't know ... What's the word?

A: No problem. Take your time. Umm ... Makes you think?

B: Yeah, 'makes you think'. That's interesting.

A: Boring!

B: Yeah, well, you have no brain.

A: Ha ha ha.

UNIT 12 - Conversation - 01

A: So, what's new?

B: Ha, ha. I finally got my new smart phone.

A: That's great. You've been waiting for like (five weeks).

B: I know. Unbelievable! But not it's all mine.

A: Do you know how it works yet?

B: Um, no. But it came with this heavy manual, so I can read all about it. Good luck with that. I'm going to use it every day though for email and internet and listening to music.

A: And how about making phone calls?

B: I wonder if I can do that. Of course, I'll be calling you all the time, you know?

UNIT 12 - Conversation - 02

A: Oh, my gosh! Look at your computer setup.

B: Yeah, well, I need the big displays for the graphic art that I do.

A: I guess you need to see every detail.

B: Yeas, exactly. I've got a lot of storage, seven very fast processors and newest software.

A: I'm so jealous.

B: Um, I stay pretty busy.

A: How about video games? Can you play Finally ......?

B: Ah, yeah. I could but I almost never play games on this computer.

A: Oh, that's such a waste.

UNIT 12 - Conversation - 03

A: Hey, how's it going?

B: Hey, what's up?

A: Just playing with my new toy here.

B: Oh, you've got one of those cool tablets. How do you like it?

A: love it, love it. I can use it for writing reports, preparing presentations, watching videos ...

B: Cool. Look at the display! How about for reading?

B: No, it's really light. I still have room for lots of books for my classes.

A: What do you need it for anyway?

B: I use it in class during lectures to take notes and I use it out of classroom writing reports, e-mailing and downloading lectures and presentations ...

A: Is that all? How about watching videos?

B: Oh, sure, a lot. I can stream videos.

A: During class?
